Acing Management Consulting Case Interviews

The case interview is the ultimate test of your capability to perform management consulting responsibilities. This is the best time to exhibit your skills that are necessary in the industry. For this reason, you need to allot time for its preparation. The more prepared you are, the more you can handle this daunting scenario.

The first step is to understand all the aspects of a case interview. This critical step is important because your knowledge will guide you all the way. Knowing the purpose, the process and the possible questions lets you imagine what it would be like in the actual interview. This should not be a difficult task since there is a lot of information on the Internet. Many management consulting firms and career websites have extensively described the process, and they’re generous with practical guidelines, as well. If you prefer first-hand tips, seek feedback from applicants who have gone through the process or current employees of your target firm.

The next recommended step is to master the consulting frameworks. You may be capable of thinking analytically but you may fall short in structuring your answer within the given time. The business dilemma is vague; at times, knowing where to start is the greatest hurdle. This concern can be resolved by applying business frameworks. You will learn how to approach the situation from different angles, identify the contributing factors and generate recommendations at the end. Practice applying different frameworks to as many cases as you can. Your confidence improves as you work on more and more business cases.

In the actual interview, understand the problem carefully, and everything else will follow. Do not just conclude it’s similar to a problem you’ve resolved during your practice. Do not be preoccupied with what consulting framework to use, either. Otherwise, you will miss important details. Listen to the interviewer carefully. Paraphrase essential points for better comprehension. Ask further questions if necessary. Remember that some interviewers don’t relay all information unless asked. If you don’t do this step right, you just waste the effort you exerted for practice and the opportunity that’s given to you.

As you resolve the problem, think aloud. Share your rationale for discarding or considering ideas. Verbalizing your thoughts puts you at an advantage. First, it lets you communicate your approach to the problem. This way, the interviewer can lead you back to the right direction if you stray from the main concern. Second, it ensures that the interviewer is on the same page with you. Third and the most important reason is it allows you to show off your problem-solving skill – what’s basically being measured in this conversation.

Also, learn to project yourself professionally through your body language, clothes and tone of voice. In an interview, it’s not only the answers that matter. Slumping and fiddling may mean you don’t have enough confidence. Making no eye contact may mean you are not sincere. On the lighter side, the interviewer assumes you are interested in his or her ideas if you nod and smile once in awhile. Coming to the interview with well-ironed clothes and neat hairstyle adds additional positive impression. If you get employed by the firm, you will appreciate the essence of professional projection even more. As you interact with different clients, you need to put your best foot forward. Otherwise, you might stumble upon rapport-related concerns. Further, you are representing your firm. If you are sending unfavorable non-verbal messages, it might ruin the established image.

Lastly, stay cool the whole time. It may take a lot of courage to do that, but it’s the only way to handle things right. When you panic, you will forget everything you’ve prepared for. If you suddenly get confused with what to answer, take a deep breath and a moment to think. Breathing keeps you poised and well-composed. Thinking for a few seconds is natural, as you’re being asked a question. Further, believe that you can do a great job. At times, acing the management consulting interview is just a matter of having the right mindset.

Consultants – To Use Or Not to Use

This is a tough question to answer for most people since a lot of the negative attitude that surrounds outsourcing can be simplified into one thought; not invented here. Of course that thought carries with it a lot of other baggage such as the quality won’t be as good as ours, there are risks in being reliant on a third party company, there are risks in that a third party company won’t have the same priorities as we do, and it costs too much.

Some of these voiced concerns can certainly have merit. For me, it all boils down to how well you run your company. If you are a goal oriented company and measure your progress, improvements, accomplishments and failures, then hiring a consultant or outsourced organization should not be a problem for you. Lets take a business category like EDI and discuss some of the pitfalls that may exist here.

First, EDI is expensive. You need trained individuals, an experienced IT staff, customers/vendors that use EDI, an adherence to the existing standards and a lot of patience. All of these cost money and time. If you wanted to control some of these risks you could do some quality hiring, but experience tells me that for some of these jobs you might not find a qualified person for some time. So if you don’t, that means spending money on training, which is manageable, but also means you might not hit your calendar targets. Lets take a look at each of the above risks and see how a consultant/outsourced group might help.

Quality. The perception is that they won’t be as good as what we will demand in house. Of course you have to do your research on any consultant or outsourced group and check their references. But, assuming you have done that, a consultant or third party organization is specialized in EDI (in this example). That means they service several clients for a similar need. That also means that their other client industries may not even parallel to yours. These are all good things. This means knowledge. This means they understand how to get things done correctly. Finally the quality measure is what you set. How would you set it in your organization? There is no reason whatsoever that would prevent you from doing the same to an outsourced group.

Reliant on a Third Party. True, this does feel risky regardless of quality references and tons of experience. The feeling here is that you will not be able to operate without them and therefore held over the barrel on fees, services, etc. How you handle this is to have someone internally to be the main point of contact and learn all that you can so that they can almost do the job themselves. Management also needs to be intimately knowledgeable about the services they provide and learn from them over the years so that you have the ability to question and challenge them when necessary. Finally, they need your business too. If they get paid by transaction, what is 10% of zero? Have a budget, work in those costs, understand the industry standards and you will be fine.

Priorities. This goes back to the quality point above as well as the single point of contact within your organization. Have the right goals set up between your two organizations. Work with a company that feels like they are just another branch of your company and that they treat all your issues with equal importance. If they don’t, let them know what you expect during those tough situations. My suggestion is to do so BEFORE you need to so they are big boy/girl conversations and not emotional and reactionary to a specific situation. Lastly, if you don’t feel you are getting the prioritization then firing a consultant or third party is fully within your control.

It costs too much. It can if you don’t understand the costs of the service you need. This also brings me back to an earlier statement of how many people you would need to run an effective EDI solution within your office, the training you will need to support, the overhead in carrying those people and the risk of not even having the talent available in your local environment. The reality is that EDI consultants are going to save your company a tremendous amount of money because of the knowledge, time savings, and manageable budgeting. Some companies that offer EDI may even keep your servers at one central location and provide service to your machines as needed. This can save you a lot of time and trouble as well. Everything is kept up to date for you without even needing to call a computer tech to your office for general maintenance. This can also free up space for you and keep your office computers running better. Of course the same can be said about any consultancy or outsourced group.

What is the moral of this story? Consultants can offer you a tremendous amount of insight and services you might not be able to hire internally. Further if the information need is a short lived need which allows you to go into a good direction for your company, then you didn’t need to hire someone for that direction change. Do your research, check those references, and make sure you have clear, organized expectations and goals. Good luck.

How to make an infographic that won’t make your viewers recoil in horror

image submission sites in usa, image sharing sites for backlinks, infographic submission, image submission websites for seo, infographic sharing, image submission seo, create infographics, image submission websites for seo

You’ve probably been in this situation before,Guest Posting too: you see a cool infographic online, you think it’s fascinating and informative, and then when you share it on social media, people react as if you just showed them an episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos. Why does this happen? Are infographics unpopular among your friends and family? Or is there something about your design that could be improved?

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but it takes more than two seconds to understand

Infographics are powerful, but they also take a long time to create. What’s more, if you don’t collaborate with a designer on their creation, there is a high chance you will wind up making ugly graphics. Because of these issues, you may be tempted to skip out on doing infographics altogether; however, there is another option: collaborative infographics. Collaborative infographics allow you to split up tasks and get help from others. This can speed up production and ensure your finished product looks great. If you want to learn how to start creating infographics, here are some tips for getting started. To People That Want To Start IMAGE SHARING But Are Affraid To Get Started.

There are 8 elements every infographic needs

copy, color, tone, voice, links, visuals, icons, and structure. These elements combine to create a collaborative infographic design. If you focus on these elements during the infographic development process then you’ll be able to ensure a piece of work will be approachable to readers. Collaborative infographics are meant to be dynamic and inviting – it shouldn’t feel like you’re reading a scientific text book when trying to find facts. Instead, use persuasive words and colorful images to show off your content. Be sure to include a call-to-action at some point in your infographic so that users know what they should do next after they’ve finished reading through all of your data.

Don’t fall into the trap of being too literal

Sometimes, you’ll find yourself trying to explain something complex through illustration. Be sure not to get too literal here—it will confuse rather than clarify. Instead, try using clean, simple lines and shapes that are intuitive and easily understood by even those unfamiliar with your subject matter. It’s also important to keep text sizes at a minimum when you’re mapping out an image—cluttering it up can be very confusing for viewers who are trying to pick out specific details. In fact, many infographics eschew words altogether; they rely on images alone to communicate ideas. And there’s nothing wrong with that! In fact, it might just help your audience remember what they learned.

Use numbers & infographics together

Infographics are a great way to take complex data, package it neatly and then present it in a way people can absorb. Even though you may have used numbers to create these visualizations, remember that many people will be encountering them for the first time. Be sure they are clear and direct. If you have any doubt about whether or not something is comprehensible, try reading it out loud — if you don’t understand what you’re saying, odds are good others won’t either. When you write infographics, keep words to a minimum; use graphics and charts instead.

Order your elements strategically

The quickest way to get yourself into trouble when making an infographic is to slap all of your information on a canvas with no order or hierarchy. Doing so makes for a cluttered mess and one that’s going to be difficult for readers to parse (and as you know from our primer on reading flow, a reader can only take in so much information at once). So what can you do? If you have space constraints, think about cutting down unnecessary data points, or use charts and graphs instead of words. If you don’t have space constraints, consider ordering your elements based on how important they are to understanding your topic—most important first. You could also organize by time: chronological order is great if it works with your topic; numerical order might work better if you want to show progress over time; alphabetical order may work well if you want to compare several different topics side-by-side.

Start with a sketch (if appropriate)

Brainstorm different ways of presenting your data. Begin with a harsh sketch and go from that point. If you’re not comfortable working with visuals, it can help to use pen and paper rather than a computer for brainstorming. Once you have some ideas, translate them into wireframes and then move on to graphics creation software like Photoshop or Illustrator. (You can also create infographics without drawing anything at all—see Using Word Clouds below.) You may need to refine your idea multiple times before getting to a final version. Consider sharing your work-in-progress with friends and colleagues; they might have helpful feedback on how to improve it.

Keep it simple & keep it short!

With infographics, there’s a tendency to want to throw everything and anything you can at your audience. This can result in a confusing or bloated mess that doesn’t tell its story well. Keep it simple by focusing on one data set and creating one visual for each step of the process. You can always add more visuals later if needed. And keep it short! A good rule of thumb is to keep your piece between 200-500 words—the shorter, the better. You don’t have time for lengthy explanations; people will read as much as they need to get their point across and then move on. If you do need more room, use images instead of text wherever possible so that you don’t lose your readers (or their attention spans).

Use images and icons instead of text whenever possible

The more visual information you include, such as tables, charts, and illustrations or photos, will give your reader something visual to look at and pay attention to. The text has a tendency of just blurring together and getting overlooked easily by readers who are bored. Images don’t do any of those things. They capture people’s attention immediately, engage them more in what they’re reading and draw them into your post. In fact, studies have shown that including images can increase conversion rates on landing pages by 80%. When it comes to infographics and data visualization, images can be even more powerful because they take advantage of our brain’s ability to process visuals 60,000 times faster than text. That means we retain much more information when we see it rather than read it. But there is one thing about infographics: You need good ones if you want your content marketing efforts to succeed!

Medicare Eliminates Consult Codes – What Now?

One of the most significant changes for Medicare billing recently is the elimination of payment for consultation codes. Your practice will have to adjust how you bill for these types of services or you will find a lot of denials.

Just in case you have not had a chance to read the newly released fee schedule (just kidding, it is a lot to read), I have summarized the section on consulting codes below.

Here are the facts regarding this new ruling and the potential impact on your practice.

1. Consultation codes 99241-99245 (outpatient/office) and 99251-99255 (inpatient) have been eliminated. Tele-health consultation G-codes (G0425-G0427) will not be eliminated.

2. Use codes for new (99201-99205) or established (99211-99215) patients to replace consultations in the office/outpatient setting.

3. Codes in the inpatient hospital setting (99221-99223) should be used to replace inpatient consultation codes (99251-99255), and for nursing facility consultations use codes (99304-99306).

4. To distinguish the difference between the admitting physician of record from the consultants for initial hospital inpatient and nursing facility admissions, Medicare will develop a modifier. Check with your local carrier for more information.

5. Payments for all Evaluation and Management codes have been increased in an attempt to offset the fees lost from the elimination of consultation codes.

An important note regarding commercial or private insurance. No information has been released by other third party payers regarding payment for consultation codes as of yet. However, if your patient has Medicare as a secondary payer, a decision will need to be made by the physician as to how you will report the consultation. Any consultation claim filed with a commercial insurer such as Blue Cross or Aetna who is primary using the eliminated consultation codes when Medicare is secondary would result in a denial for the secondary claim by Medicare. In those instances where Medicare is secondary, you may want to consider using the new guidelines as stated above for reporting consultation codes.

One more note. If you have not updated your enrollment information with Medicare since November 2003, you must do so. Although enrolled in Medicare, many physicians who are eligible to refer Medicare beneficiaries to other Medicare providers or suppliers for services do not have current enrollment records in Medicare. A current enrollment record is one that is in the Medicare provider enrollment, chain and ownership system (PECOS) and also contains the physician’s national provider identifier (NPI).

Follow these few simple guidelines and you should have no problem being paid for consulting codes.

Firewall Management: Many a times, organizations carry out firewall management onsite and this is possible only with its IT security employees. But, if you hire an IT consultant for the purpose of firewall management, they assure you that internal sabotage efforts and advanced hacking strategies are opposed by the latest firewall strategies. But now, IT consultants offer remote data backup services that can easily save your crucial data and information from hardware loss, accidental deletion, relocation or natural calamity. Once your data is backed up remotely, you can feel free about other things occurring in your company. You can now retrieve it whenever you want.
